Which employers’ bright idea and initiative is it to confine the FWs to ‘barracks’ to use a military term? As far as I know, the govt’s restriction at Little India is ‘no alcohol allowed’ NOT ‘no foreign workers allowed’, in that 1.1 km2 proclaimed/restriction zone. But I believe a govt agency, the LTA, has at least a part in it, as it has banned the bus companies from busing them to Little India from their dormitories.
But why should there be any issue with them doing the other usual things that they usually do at Little India, like meeting friends and having a meal with them, and shopping for their spices, rice, food ingredients, etc? Men do not live by alcohol alone, you know.
Unfortunately, it does accurately reflect the minimalist attitudes of their Singapore employers and some govt agencies towards the workers in the absence of alternatives being provided.
Would the Law Minister visit them during this week end at their lodgings and asked the FWs whether they have any grievances? Chances are that he would get a very different response from them this time.
